Designers are gaining a paradigmatic significance for the further development of knowledge at the beginning of the 21st century. As a university of design, the New Design University is encouraging this development and is trying to expand traditional knowledge in terms of the expansion of this kind of creative knowledge production in all its departments.

NEW – EXPLORATION.

The New Design University sees itself in continuous dialogue with the intensive development of society, which should be observed and investigated. Social and technological developments, scientific knowledge and artistic achievements must be comprehended in their interaction in order to develop a conception of the social dynamics.

DESIGN – DESIGN.

Problems must be analysed and worked upon nowadays also beyond disciplinary borders. The New Design University is therefore trying to combine its three faculties – Design, Technology, Business Design – in a constructive and systematic manner under the key motive >Design<. This combination is successful due to the mutual orientation to the current development problems, to the formulation of joint research concerns and a congruent comprehension of the role of creative knowledge production.

UNIVERSITY – CHANGE.

Above all, the research of the university means participation. In view of the urgency of the social developments, also such forms of knowledge can be utilised, which universities, oriented towards a purposeful, inter-subjective and abstract concept of knowledge, have previously excluded. This could mean competences that have been acquired in the course of everyday life and /or vocational life as well as traditions of craftsmanship or knowledge emanating from the field of design. In this way educational publicity will be achieved which will result in the simultaneous arising to the position of the partners of the university.

The New Design University is training a generation of designers who are capable of creating and implementing innovative and ecological, social and aesthetic – sustainable solutions.

Master Innovation through Design: This Master programme is a post graduate degree at the New Design University St. Pölten. Research in the Master´s programme aim to examine the ways in which design anthropology and design ethnography can inform innovation processes currently and in future. Innovation actually begins even before any design work, through the ability to arrange the underlying processes in new and innovative ways. The multidisciplinary approach of the studies enables animated methods of knowledge transfer between creative disciplines, there by opening up space for the development of innovative and unconventional design approaches. Key research areas are the development of research methodologies, the cultural change in the perception of older age groups and the critical discussion about the technological era of sensing or the consumer culture of being.

The practical work and theoretical research on creativity, design and innovation processes enables the contribution to academic research in this field through the formulation of the “User-inspired Innovation Process Model (UII®)”.
